NEW YORK — Sept. 22, 2008 — Microsoft Corp. today announced it has released to manufacturing its newest server — Windows HPC Server 2008, giving Wall Street firms an easy-to-deploy, cost-effective and scalable high-performance computing (HPC) solution. Today’s event kicks off a series of global launch activities in the coming weeks to support the new product.
During a keynote address at the 2008 High Performance on Wall Street conference, Bill Laing, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Windows Server and Solutions Division, discussed how financial services firms are increasingly turning to HPC resources to conduct real-time and intra-day risk analysis in response to the turbulent market environment.
“Companies have to be more efficient than ever with IT resources, but need to maintain their position in a competitive marketplace. They require HPC solutions that deploy quickly, integrate in a heterogeneous environment and scale from workstation to cluster,” Laing said. “The launch of Windows HPC Server 2008 is just another step in our vision to drive HPC mainstream.”
In his keynote speech, Laing also noted that the company’s HPC vision goes beyond traditional HPC workloads. Microsoft brings the value of an integrated HPC solution and a productive development environment to customers for whom high-performance computing has been out of reach in the past. By focusing on productivity for users, developers and administrators, Microsoft is positioned to take high-performance computing mainstream.
“IDC research shows that high-performance computing has been one of the highest-growth IT markets over the past five years,” said Earl Joseph, HPC program vice president at IDC. “Microsoft has made significant advancements in its products targeted for the HPC market, especially with the launch of Windows HPC Server 2008.”
Laing also talked about how Windows HPC Server 2008 gives developers the tools to use high-performance computing with the Microsoft products that businesses already own and use every day, including Office Excel and Office SharePoint Server, through a new service-oriented architecture (SOA) within HPC development.
Windows HPC Server 2008, the successor to Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003, is based on Windows Server 2008 and is designed to do the following:
Greater Opportunities for Customers and Partners Close to 100 companies in various vertical industries, including Lloyds TSB Bank in financial services, participated in early evaluation and feedback programs during the development of Windows HPC Server 2008.
Morgan Stanley, a leading global financial services firm providing a wide range of investment banking, securities, investment management and wealth management services, has been working closely with Microsoft on the development of Windows HPC Server 2008.
“At Morgan Stanley, we create and develop models and systems designed to enhance our securities and investment banking businesses,” said Jay Dweck, global head of strategies and technology for the Institutional Securities Group (ISG) at Morgan Stanley. In this capacity, Dweck runs Morgan Stanley Innovative Data, Environments, Analytics & Systems (IDEAS). “We are closely evaluating Microsoft’s Windows HPC Server 2008 to provide Morgan Stanley with the ability to maintain our competitive edge.”
For partners, Windows HPC Server 2008 provides a broad platform for ISVs and an expanded playing field for OEMs to enable new innovations in high-performance computing. Microsoft is working with more than 60 partners, including Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Cray Inc., Dawning Technologies Inc., Dell Inc., HP, IBM Corp., Intel Corporation, transtec AG., Verari Systems Inc., Viglen Ltd. and VXTECH, to continue to drive high-performance computing farther into the mainstream.
“We believe that Windows HPC Server 2008 and IBM System x hardware will significantly expand the high-performance computing market,” said Dave Jursik, vice president of HPC Sales for IBM. “The combination of Microsoft’s proven software with IBM’s unique supercomputing tools and solutions gives clients industry-leading productivity and extreme, high-end performance.”
“Milliman is very proud to be the first actuarial system vendor to be integrated with Windows HPC Server 2008,” said Pat Renzi, MG-ALFA product manager at Milliman Inc. “Our recent integration continues our history of success in delivering the speed and capacity of high-performance computing from Microsoft. In addition, MG-ALFA is a highly scalable application that is extremely easy to implement and integrate into the IT infrastructure of our insurance company clients.”
Last week, Microsoft announced a new partnership with supercomputer leader Cray to introduce a new compact supercomputer, the Cray CX1. With prices starting at $25,000 (U.S. estimated retail price (ERP)), the CX1 running Windows HPC Server 2008 is easy to purchase, deploy, operate and upgrade. The solution will enable companies in various industries to unify their Windows-based desktop and server workflows.

I just wanted to say a big thankyou to everyone that attended our latest meeting last night. A very impressive turn out with two fantastic speakers (both of whom I learnt a lot on from and I know I’m not alone).
Many thanks to all the folks at Microsoft without whose help this event would not have been possible.
Off to start planning the next event so stay tuned…
Of course today being September 11th is going to make a lot of people remember what happened on this date 7 years ago. Of course this was a terrible thing but let us also take a moment to remember ALL unnecessary loss of human life be it through terrorism, war, man made disaster whatever.
Also remember that in the majority of cases there are two “sides” affected, both of which will have endured suffering, a fact that often gets overlooked or forgotten.
According to reports such as this from the BBC, rumours are abound that Ghostbusters III is FINALLY going to happen. Fingers crossed it’s not just another hype story and that it actually happens. Be good to get the guys back together again although to be honest I HOPE they go back to the roots of the original as Ghostbusters II for me a bit of a let down and a bit cheesy compared to the original.
Maybe one day I can get a complete set of pictures of me with the Busters – Winston down only 3 to go…
Today more than 20 partners announce plans for Microsoft virtualisation solutions; Microsoft Hyper-V Server, Microsoft Application Virtualisation 4.5 and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 available within 30 days.
Reading, UK. — Sept. 8, 2008 — Kicking off a global series of “Get Virtual Now” events that will reach more than 250,000 customers and partners, Microsoft Corp. today announced strong customer and partner adoption of Microsoft virtualisation software, new tools and programs to drive partner success.
Microsoft also announced the upcoming availability of System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Microsoft Application Virtualisation 4.5 and the new Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 as a no-cost download during today’s keynote addresses streamed live at http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/events/virtualization/default.mspx.
Microsoft executives will further outline virtualisation solutions for customers and also demonstrate the live migration capabilities of the upcoming release of Windows Server 2008 R2.
“Now is the time for customers to get virtual,” said Bob Kelly, corporate vice president of infrastructure server marketing within Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business. “With desktop and datacenter virtualisation offerings available from Microsoft and its partners, customers are adopting Microsoft solutions because they have better value and will make IT operations more dynamic. At a lower cost than other datacenter virtualisation solutions, Microsoft software meets customers’ needs from the desktop to the datacenter in an integrated offering on the platform they know.”
Microsoft Customers “Get Virtual Now”
Web-based human resource, payroll and employment verification services provider TALX is now in the process of developing a new, advanced datacenter to service its 9,000 clients. By using Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V to enhance virtualisation performance and host more virtual machines per physical server, TALX will be able to further consolidate its server environment, reduce hardware costs, save on power and cooling costs, and conserve datacenter space. TALX expects to save another $1,000 in software licensing costs per each physical server it can replace with a virtual machine. The company also expects to save approximately 50 percent in annual power and cooling costs by consolidating its server environment with Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. A case study is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/casestudy.aspx?casestudyid=4000002609.
“In the employer and verifier marketplace, a lot of our competitive advantage is related to time to market. If we can shave days or weeks off our cycle, that’s a big plus,” said Bryan Garcia, vice president of technology at TALX. “With Hyper-V and Virtual Machine Manager, we’re going to make the infrastructure a lot more flexible and agile. We expect to save at least $5,000 per year per installed virtual host machine, directly out of infrastructure costs for energy, hardware acquisition and hardware maintenance.”
Another business that is already reaping the rewards of Microsoft’s virtualisation solutions is WorleyParsons Ltd. With 31,000 employees working in 34 countries, WorleyParsons is the leading provider of professional services to the energy, resource and complex process industries. As a result, the company relies on an agile and flexible IT infrastructure to deliver the expanding business applications required for sustaining growth. WorleyParsons is deploying Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V to help reduce the growing costs associated with rapid global expansion. Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 will help WorleyParsons simplify server management and the physical-to-virtual server conversion as the company converts 50 percent of its physical servers to virtual servers. This conversion is expected to reduce hardware costs and space requirements, improve server management, and facilitate faster deployment of applications. A case study is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/casestudy.aspx?casestudyid=4000002503.
“Virtualisation with Windows Server 2008 is providing the ability to deliver applications quickly, which is what we need to do to differentiate ourselves from competition,” said Michael Alberghini, manager, WorleyParsons Group ICT Infrastructure and Architecture. “In the past, this would require deploying a new physical server, which could take three weeks because of the time involved in purchasing and setting up the server. With Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and System Center, we now have the existing in-house skills, templates and ability to provision in a much shorter timeframe. System Center Virtual Machine Manager provides an excellent viewpoint with a clear, enterprisewide view of servers.”
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), the world’s leading solution provider for commercial and industrial customers in the print media industry, was looking to reduce the cost of desktop application management. Heidelberg turned to the application virtualisation capabilities that are part of Microsoft Desktop Optimisation Pack (MDOP) for Software Assurance to create application packages, which would reduce the cost and complexity of the complete life cycle of application package management.
“We have deployed 80 applications via Microsoft Application Virtualisation to more than 14,000 users running Windows Vista, and plan to increase that to our entire worldwide standardised applications in the coming months,” said Michael Neff, chief information officer at Heidelberg. “Application Virtualisation has been a key tool for reducing the cost of application management. Not only is it is far less expensive to deploy applications with Application Virtualisation, but we can get the job done and up to four times faster, too. So far, we’ve reduced the related effort and time by 60 percent.”
New Server Virtualisation and Management Products
Product-related news at today’s event included the following:
· Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008, a new hypervisor-based server virtualisation product, will be released within 30 days and be available at no cost via the Web. Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 provides a simplified, reliable, and optimised virtualisation solution that allows customers to consolidate Windows or Linux workloads onto a single physical server. Hyper-V Server 2008 allows customers to leverage their existing patching, provisioning, management and support tools, processes and skills.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager enables customers to configure and deploy new virtual machines and centrally manage their virtualised infrastructure, whether running on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2, Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 or VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3. System Center Virtual Machine Manager is part of the System Center suite of products, which provides centralised, enterprise-class management of physical and virtual resources across desktops and datacenters.
· Microsoft demonstrated for the first time a live migration feature of Windows Server 2008 R2. Live migration utilises the integrated hypervisor technology and high-availability features of the server operating system so that customers can move running applications between servers to accommodate changing, dynamic computing needs across a datacenter. In addition to other features, the next version of Microsoft Hyper-V Server will have live migration capabilities.
· Last week Microsoft released Microsoft Application Virtualisation 4.5, which gives desktop users a boost in fully harnessing the power of Windows Vista by streaming resource-heavy applications to the desktop. This helps eliminate potential software conflicts driving desktop stability and performance, while simultaneously enabling IT managers to centrally control key applications and their use. Application Virtualisation 4.5 will be included as part of Microsoft Desktop Optimisation Pack 2008 R2, which is due for general availability in the coming weeks.

"In our rolling review of Windows 2008 Server components, we've saved the most intriguing--Hyper-V--for last.
Our take? Hyper-V is great for basic Windows server consolidation, and it works well in rudimentary high-availability scenarios, but it's no match for the wide range of enterprise capabilities offered by Citrix (NSDQ: CTXS) XenServer and VMware's suite of products.

A couple of new articles today looking at Queries. The first Can I limit the number of results returned by a Query? looks at the new feature in ConfigMgr that allows you to modify the number of results ConfigMgr returns when running a Query before it stops execution directly through the Admin Console (although you can still do it through the Registry as in previous versions of SMS).
The second Why do I not see the "Run" and "Run Query Special" options when I right-click on a Query? explains that even though in parts of the Product Help it mentions using the “Run” and “Run Query Special” options these aren’t in fact available in the product (so I’ve sent an email to Microsoft highlighting this so that hopefully this can be corrected in a future version of the product documentation included with the product itself).

So today it’s official. EDS is now an HP company. Of course the coming months are going to be a time of great change as the integration and inevitable consolidation between the two companies take place. For me personally until the actual details of how the acquisition affect me personally are worked out it’s pretty much business as usual for me (and no doubt countless others).
EDS was a big company before, but now it’s part of HP the numbers just get even bigger and scarier:

You may recall my blog post Making folks aware help is available “out here”.. where I was commenting on Computer Weekly’s How to manage your software assets article which included the comment from the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity being overwhelmed with the amount of information ConfigMgr returned.
So I decided to send the following letter to Computer Weekly (which was published in the latest issue), which will hopefully raise awareness in the user community that ConfigMgr help is “out here”:
“Help available to Microsoft Configuration Manager Users Cliff Hobbs Microsoft MVP ConfigMgr/ SMS I read with interest your article "How to manage your software assets" (computerweekly.com/231760.htm), especially the comments made by Joy Jerram of the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity concerning her experience of Microsoft's Configuration Manager.
I agree that Configuration Manager has it's nuances (as do all of the systems management products in the market), but one of the key differentials when it comes to Configuration Manager over other products is the vast amount of information available not only on Microsoft's own website but in the wider user community from websites, blogs and user groups.
The prime reason for my setting up FAQShop.com and co-founding the UK Windows Management User Group (WMUG) is to facilitate the sharing of information, help and experiences.
If Jerram or any of your other readers are experiencing Configuration Manager issues there are plenty of folks in the community willing to help and share information.”
