A couple of ways I've found are:
Look at the SQL Service names which contains the instance name:
For example if SQL has been installed to the Default instance the service name will be:
SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)
If SQL has been installed to an instance called "SCCM" the service name will be:
SQL Server (SCCM) instead of SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)
Look in SQL Server Configuration Manager:
Load SQL Server Configuration Manager (Start | Programs | Microsoft SQL Server 2008 | Configuration Tools | SQL Server Configuration Manager).
Once SQL Server Configuration Manager has loaded navigate to:
SQL Server Configuration Manager (Local) | SQL Server Network Configuration.
Under here you will find a list of all the SQL instances on the server in question prefixed by "Protocols for"
So for example if you have installed SQL to the Default instance you will see
Protocols for MSSQLSERVER
If SQL has been installed to an instance called "ConfigMgr" you will see:
Protocols for ConfigMgr
So if you have two instances of SQL running (one installed to the default instance and the other installed to ConfigMgr), you would see:
Now if I didn't have an iPad I would probably think "Why would you want to do this?" However, as an iPad owner and seeing as almost everyone has an iPhone (except me), I can really see the usefulness of this free application you can download from iTunes for remotely waking up machines from iPads/ iPhones even if just to scare your desk neighbour thinking your machine is possessed as it turns itself on all by itself just as you enter the office.

I'm pleased to announce that the new FAQShop Facebook Page is now up and running which you can access at:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/FAQShopcom-Microsoft-System-Center-FAQs/350202469935
I know everyone is different and we all consume information in different ways. With there being so many people on Facebook I'm hoping that this will serve as a useful addition to the FAQShop arsenal, whose goal (as it's always been), is to spread the word of managing the Windows Platofrm with the ultimate goal of "Making Your Life Easier".
Everyone is welcome and feel free to tell your Facebook friends all about it.

If you've been wanting to try out ConfigMgr v.Next but haven't had to getting around to it this should help. Microsoft has released a pre-configured Windows 2008 R2 VHD with the Beta 1 of v.Next already installed.
To download it goto:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1b23c540-9b9f-4d41-a05d-d4b216061957
Here's some information I received from the Connect folks about this:
"The System Center Configuration Manager team would like to announce that the following has been released and available for immediate download:
Pre-configured Configuration Manager v.Next Beta1 Virtual Hard drive (VHD)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1b23c540-9b9f-4d41-a05d-d4b216061957&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed:+MicrosoftDownloadCenter+(Microsoft+Download+Center)
This download enables you to quickly evaluate a fully configured virtual machine that has ConfigMgr v.Next Beta 1 installed. This VHD is based on a Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system and is a fully built virtual machine ready to import into your Hyper-V environments. Since the virtual machine has been fully configured with v.Next Beta 1 installed, this should improve the overall evaluation experience to make it faster and less time consuming to evaluate v.Next Beta 1 and provide feedback regarding your experience with the product.
Feedback in the form of product suggestions, bugs, and all other can be submitted through the Microsoft Connect using the feedback tool. Quick link to the tool is:https://connect.microsoft.com/ConfigurationManagervnext/feedback/CreateFeedbackForm.aspx?FeedbackFormConfigurationID=4216&FeedbackType=1
Also available on Microsoft Connect is the full v.Next installation media. This media can be downloaded and used to install on your own servers and hardware. The v.Next Beta 1 VHD makes evaluation a lot easier because everything has been pre-configured for you. Becoming familiar with all the new features of v.Next is a lot easier.
Support is provided through the Microsoft Connect newsgroups and also through the Feedback tool submissions. All feedback is triaged daily by members of our Product Group and Customer Support Service engineers.
Download the v.Next Beta1 VHD today!

Thought this was impossible? Well here's the evidence:
No it's not the 1st April, I've not Photoshopped this and I'm not talking about using Remote Desktop or something else to connect this to a server.
So how am I doing it? Well it's part of my new Mobile Office setup pictured below:
So I've got the MacBook Pro (sporting the new FAQShop Facebook Page - more on this in a minute). To left if the Apple Magic TrackPad (no more external mouse for me), and then to the left of this the glue that hold this all together:
The Huawei E585 MiFi from Three. Basically this little box of tricks is like having your own personal WiFi hotspot. Up to 5 devices can connect to this at the same time to make your own little portable, private network which can also access the 3G network.
So how does it work?
1. Turn on the Huawei.
2. Connect the MacBook to the Huawei.
3. Connect the iPad to the Huawei.
4. Run a clever little application on the iPad called Air Display that basically allows you to connect the MacBook to the iPad via IP (nothing up my sleeves, no smoke or mirrors or cables).
5. Then I load up VMware on the Mac to load my ConfigMgr VM and simply drag and drop the VM window (or any other app come to that) over to the iPad and hey presto...!!!
Because the devices are talking wirelessly I can pick up the iPad and walk away and use the apps physically running on the MacBook but that are displayed on the iPad screen (not really tried this but I've read reports of many that have).
Another thing to note is that the iPad case I use is NOT the Apple one which frankly has got bad reviews and is more expensive than the one I've bought which is available from Amazon here (there's also more pics there):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-Advanced-Luxury-Executive-Wallet/dp/B003PA53NG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1281697564&sr=8-1
This is a great case, cheaper than the Apple one and just works. I LOVE this setup as when I'm away from home I now have my own self-contained network with dual screens (amazing how much your productivity drops when using a single screen when you are so used to using dual screens all the time).
You're also not limited to dual screens with Air Display. In my home office I can have for example Word running on my 24" Cinema Display, VMware running on the MacBook Pro and then email or something else like TweetDeck running on the iPad (I'll soon need a bigger office with all these screens).
PS - The company behind Air Display (Avatron Software, Inc.) are apparently working on a Windows version of Air Display so pretty soon all of you running Windows as your primary OS will have the ability of "running" your apps on the iPad.

Problem:
I'm trying to upgrade a Secondary Site but the option to upgrade the Site is greyed out. I'm seeing this in the ConfigMgrSetup.log:
Setup has detected an existing installation of the administrator console. This server seems to be a site server for a secondary site.
Because the current installation is a different version, you do not have the option of modifying the installation.
Resolution:
The reason for the error is Microsoft assumes that the SMS Admin Console is not installed on a Secondary as there's no real point. Although you can do it, there's very little point as you need to connect back to the Secondary's Parent Primary Site in order to be able to administer the Secondary Site.
Uninstall the Administrator Console from the Secondary Site then re-attempt the upgrade to ConfigMgr at which point you will be able to upgrade it.
When I double-click "SPLASH.HTA" in the root of the ConfigMgr media I get an "Internet Explorer Script Error" dialog box popup that states:
"An error has occurred in the script on this page. The system cannot find the file specified.
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?"
If I click "Yes" I see a white screen with "(c) 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved" at the bottom but nothing else.
Make sure your ConfigMgr media is not corrupt/ incomplete. In this case an attempt had been made to copy the ConfigMgr media but the copy had failed part way through.
Re-copying the media resolved the issue.
