[MS KBs] A System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site server randomly stops processing status messages

A new ConfigMgr Hotfix has just been released under KB982399 “A System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site server randomly stops processing status messages”:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=982399

IMPORTANT: Remember that Hotfixes should ONLY be applied if you are experiencing the issue documented in the KB Article. If you’re not seeing the issue DON’T apply it as you could end up breaking something else.

[SMS] SMS 2003: ITMU v3 requires two passes, two reboots, to deploy April 2010 security patches

This was mentioned on today’s MVP call with the Product Group, which apparently caused a few issues for some of you. So just in case any of you missed it I thought I’d re-post this from the Configuration Manager Support Team Blog:

We've been getting some calls about this one so I thought it deserved a mention here.  If you're having some ITMU related issues with the April 2010 security patch install then you'll want to take a quick read of this one.  Note that this issue only affects SMS 2003.  Our currently supported products, ConfigMgr 2007 and WSUS 3.0, do not share this limitation.

=====

Issue: Deployment of the April 2010 security patches requires two executions of PatchInstall.exe and may require two reboots of the client. On the first execution, the PatchInstall.log shows:

INSTALL FAILED: UpdateID = 804db346-55c5-44b7-8491-1ecf77062836, QNumber = 978601, Title = Security Update for Windows XP (KB978601), ExitCode = 1642, Executable = C:\WINDOWS\system32\VPCache\PackageID\SmsWusHandler.exe /InstallFile:"\\DPServer\SMSPKGx$\PackageID\804db346-55c5-44b7-8491-1ecf77062836\windowsxp-kb978601-x86-enu_49ae6ac4f6e0a609124f2ce6f80fcef249273c02.exe" /UpdateID:804db346-55c5-44b7-8491-1ecf77062836

...

INSTALLED: UpdateID = d9782d11-f459-402c-bf34-d2606caa91a1, QNumber = 979309, Title = Security Update for Windows XP (KB979309), ExitCode = 0, Duration = 2, Executable = C:\WINDOWS\system32\VPCache\PackageID\SmsWusHandler.exe /InstallFile:"\\DPServer\SMSPKGx$\PackageID\d9782d11-f459-402c-bf34-d2606caa91a1\windowsxp-kb979309-x86-enu_b6a3d8953714847d02d614e8fcb5b4171d1029fb.exe" /UpdateID:d9782d11-f459-402c-bf34-d2606caa91a1

And on the second execution, after the reboot, the same log shows:

REBOOT NEEDED: UpdateID = 804db346-55c5-44b7-8491-1ecf77062836, QNumber = 978601, Title = Security Update for Windows XP (KB978601), ExitCode = 3010, Duration = 2, Executable = C:\WINDOWS\system32\VPCache\PackageID\SmsWusHandler.exe /InstallFile:"\\DPServer\SMSPKGx$\PackageID\804db346-55c5-44b7-8491-1ecf77062836\windowsxp-kb978601-x86-enu_49ae6ac4f6e0a609124f2ce6f80fcef249273c02.exe" /UpdateID:804db346-55c5-44b7-8491-1ecf77062836

Cause: MS10-019 shipped as two KBs - KB978601 and KB979309 - with KB978601 requiring that KB979309 be installed in order to install successfully. ITMU v3 has a limitation that results in PatchInstall.exe trying to install KB978601 first.

Resolution: Per http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=2890, SMS 2003 mainstream support ended on January 12, 2010. As such, no further updates to ITMU will be released and use of the work-around - running the Patch Install package twice - is required.

It is important to note that our currently supported products, SCCM 2007 and WSUS 3.0, do not share this limitation and can deploy the current security patches in one pass.

[Deployment] New Book from Setup & Deployment MVPs Johan Arwidmark & Mikael Nystrom

Well I’m pleased to be able to blog about the availability of the first book relating to Windows Deployment using MDT 2010 Lite Touch and WDS written by WMUG’s good friends Johan Arwidmark and Mikael Nystrom.

The book is called “Deployment Fundamentals – Volume 1: Deploying Windows clients using MDT 2010 Lite Touch” in Johan’s own words this is:

“the first real world book on deploying Windows 7 (and Windows XP) using MDT 2010 Lite Touch and WDS.  The book covers end to end deployment, inventory, applications (even ugly ones), real drivers, real hardware, real problems, real network environments and of course, real world solutions.”

Currently available via Amazon at:

http://www.amazon.com/Deployment-Fundamentals-Deploying-Windows-clients/dp/1451570031

PS – The guys are investigating options for making this more readily available to non-US buyers but for now you’ll need to buy from Amazon.com and wait for it to ship.

[Win7] Now a Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)

It’s been a busy time for me of late getting my certifications up-to-date and I’m pleased to say that I’ve achieved my Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) in Windows 7 which I hope will stand me in good stood employment prospect wise as there seems to be a lot of deployment projects going on at the moment “out there”.

On reflection if I knew before what I know now I’d have studied for both this exam (70-686 PRO: Windows 7, Enterprise Desktop Administrator), and the “TS: Windows 7, Configuring” exam (70-680), before attempting either. There again I’m testament to the fact that you can pass 70-680 without studying for 70-686 before.

[TrainCert] Welcome to the Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) Program

Well folks it’s official - I’m now a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), so if you or anyone you know is in need of some Official Microsoft training or indeed if you know of a training company looking for a Trainer then please get in touch.

Congratulations! On behalf of Microsoft, we are happy to welcome you to the Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) Program. You will be sent a Microsoft Certified Trainer Welcome Kit within four to six weeks.

[Photography] If you’ve lost a screw on your Manfrotto Tripod….

Somehow and somewhere one of the screws/ bolts on the legs of my Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod had fallen off. After checking the rest were not loose (none of the others were so bizarre this particular one worked lose), it was decision time.

Go to a camera store like Jessops where I would no doubt pay a fortune or try to source the item from a DIY store. So after spending a fair amount of time scouring the various nuts, bolts and screws B&Q sell (and practically on the verge of giving it up as a lost cause as there are SO many), I found the answer:

Machine Screw
Pan Head Slotted
Zinc Plated
5x16mm- 3/16” x 5/8” – Qty 10

Price £3.58

I thought I’d post the details here just in case anyone else needs them.

[TrainCert] SMS 2003 MCP Exam to Retire 31st October

I see that Microsoft has decided to retire the SMS 2003 MCP exam 70-089 (along with a bunch of others)  on the 31st October. Seems a bit strange to me personally as there are still LOTS of folks using SMS 2003 and personally I would have expected it to stick around until the v.Next exam is out.

So if you’re thinking of taking this exam then the clock is ticking. Here is a list of all the exams being retired:

[Patch Tuesday] Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for May 2010

Looks like 2 Critical patches this month:

MS10-030

Vulnerability in Outlook Express and Windows Mail Could Allow Remote Code Execution (978542)
This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user visits a malicious e-mail server. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

MS10-031

Vulnerability in Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications Could Allow Remote Code Execution (978213)
This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a host application opens and passes a specially crafted file to the Visual Basic for Applications runtime. If a user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
