Let's start by getting the name right...

There seems to be a lot of confusion over the proper acronyms/ abbreviations for Microsoft's System Center products (for example "SCCM" for  "System Center Configuration Manager").

So just to make sure we're all singing off the same song sheet below is the OFFICIAL list of acronyms/ abbreviations for the System Center family:

  • Microsoft Operations Manager—MOM
  • Microsoft System Center Capacity Planner—SCCP
  • Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager—ConfigMgr
  • Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager—SCDPM
  • Microsoft System Center Essentials—SCE
  • Microsoft System Center Operations Manager—OpsMgr
  • Microsoft System Center Reporting Manager—SCRM
  • Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager—SCVMM
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server—SMS

The trick is now to get everyone into the habit of using them...

Can YOU find the information you need?

I've lost count of the number of times (twice today already), that I've heard something similar to the following:

"I have an SMS-related problem/ issue and I can't seem to find any information relating to it. I can't believe I'm the only person seeing this..!!"

I've experienced this first hand on countless occasions and of course I try to do "my bit" through FAQShop.

I'd be interested to hear if this is your experiences (post a comment here or email me),  and I'll of course pass it onto Microsoft (the more weight we have for this argument the more chance we stand of getting something done so get typing..!!).

The other thing to bear in mind is that if every SMS user took literally 5 minutes to document an issue and how they resolved it then sent it to me to publish we'd rapidly build up an awesome knowledge base of "real world" experience that will hopefully save someone else some hair pulling in the future.

Oh and this isn't just related to SMS, the same goes for any Microsoft Systems Management product.

Feel free to email me your comments using this link or submit anything you want to publish to FAQShop using this link.

Microsoft needs your help TODAY...

Microsoft is running a short, anonymous survey titled "SCCM Reporting of Driver Installation State" over at:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=75yhaMKssvxARBx7louo_2fA_3d_3d

"The Microsoft SCCM team is proposing a solution where hardware vendor driver updates are delivered via the SCCM Software Updates infrastructure. We’d like to understand the importance of SCCM reporting the installation state to your corporation."

So if you've got a couple of minutes (it's really that quick) TODAY (closing date is 14th June), please pop over and help the Microsoft folks out.

Testing Out Windows Live Writer

I've been trying out BlogJet for the last month or so and when my trial period expired I decided to buy it.

Then as is typical in life, as soon as I'd paid for it I stumbled across the beta version of Windows Live Writer which seems to do almost everything that BlogJet does (well certainly what I need it to do), and best of all it's free.

I've found a couple of issues with Live Writer I don't like namely:

  • Sometimes it's not TRULY WYSIWYG more WYSINWYG
  • Content you copy from a web page and paste into it doesn't always display correctly
  • There's no default way (that I've found), to set the default behaviour for how you want embedded links to open - I always want a hyperlink to open in a new window
  • There's no way of publishing the same post to multiple blogs at the same time - Ideally I just want to push a button and have it appear on all my blogs

(Some of these equally apply to BlogJet BTW).

These are certainly not that much of an issue that they're going to stop me using the product.

If you're interested you can download Windows Live Writer from:
