  • Blogcast: Collection Criteria & Modifications

I thought I would put something together that outlined the difference between Direct Membership and SQL based collections. I also describe how to exclude resources from a specific collection, AD groups and a few other odds and ends. This is directed towards the beginner, but might be useful to others as well. If you have any questions, let me know.

  • Blogcast: The Basics of SMS Patch Management

I had a request to create a blogcast on patch management. The Blogcast is a general overview of how to seup patches, configure the scan tool and dynamic packages. I hope you enjoy it and also hope you find the information useful.

  • Blogcast: How to Create a SMS Query and Customize It

I thought it might be fun to start some of my Blogcasts with the basics. This Blogcast will explain some of the things you can query on and why you can query on them. Also, it will show how to modify the results and specify specific criteria to narrow your results. The Blogcast is almost 20 minutes, so sit back and watch how it works!

  • Blogcast: How to Create Your First Blogcast!

I thought that written directions seemed somewhat hard to understand and follow, so I came up with a video for you to use. The video shows all the basic steps you need to take to create your own blogcast! Now, I'm not Jay Leno and don't have all the character he may have, but at least you can see for yourself how quick it is to set it up and get it online for others to view.

  • I Need Your Opinion Please

I have heard (and seen) that the blogcasts I have created have been a bit fuzzy and hard to see. I have also seen this on many of other blogcats. I came up with something a little different and it looks much better to me. Can a few of you click on the link below and let me know what works best for you. I think viewing the blogcast on the web page looks much better rather than watching it in Media Player. Either send me an email or just reply to this post. Have you guys noticed that other blogcasts are sometimes fuzzy too?

    Thanks in Advance!

The blogcast will start when you open the page and pause when you minimize. To view the blogcast in Media Player, click on the title in the upper left corner of the page.

  • What would you like to see in a blogcast?

I have been putting together a number of Blogcasts in the past few days. However, I would like to know what you would like to see covered in a Blogcast. There are other people interested as well and will be watching the replies of this post. Would you like to see how to install SMS from start to finish, including how to extend the schema? I know I would! Would you like to see how to create useful queries and if so, what kind? How about MP troubleshooting? You pick and let me (us) know and we will come up with it.

  • Blogcast: How to Modify the SMS Advanced Client .MSI

Nothing bothers me more than having to add switches to an application. My blogcast will describe how to embed the “smssitecode=auto” switch into the .MSI. I also added something else to the blogcast that is not in the post. Want to know how to increase the default cache size without a switch?

  • My First Two Blogcasts

It's official, I have created 2 blogcasts based on prior articles I have written. I figured I would start with some that I get a lot of questions about. I hope some of you are interested in creating some blogcasts since I think it helps show the message from your articles and or posts. You could almost start from scratch on any subject and make it into a Blogcast. Hope you all enjoy them! I am also thinking about a Blogcast bloopers spot on the web site. I can't tell you how many times I screw up and have to start over. If I screw them up, I know others are as well and they are kind of funny to watch. If anyone is interested in me showing them, let me know.

They will get better with time... be kind :)

  • Free Hosting for SMS Related Blogcasts Now Available

Ok, I had an idea and it may be more than I have time for, but I'm going to give it a shot. I have created a new web site called The Blogcast Repository (just up 30 minutes ago) and I have 2500 MB of storage to share with all of you. My intention is to simply have an online repository for all of you that are interested in creating Blogcasts. I think I have some awsome ideas for the site and don't want to promise anything, but use your imagination and you might get the idea.

I am completely open to ideas on this and if you want to share your comments / thoughts, that would be appreciated. As for now... you would blog as normal, but when a person views your Blogcast, it would simply stream from my site, not a redirection by any means.

  • Storage Space for New Blogcasts Needed

I have decided to follow the calling and create a slew of SMS blogcasts. I spent 3 hours goofing with them last night and I need a server to be a repository. Does anyone know (or have) a place where these can be uploaded to? I would imagine that more and more people will start doing this, so a respoitory will deffinately be needed. If you have some space to donate and don't want to post it, just send me an email.

    Thanks!

  • TIP: Increase SMS Response Time by Connecting to a Different Domain Controller

We had an issue recently where a remote site (well connected) was complaining about SMS being slow. I looked at the logs and compared the site configurations to a site that did not state that they had issues. Everything was exactly the same. So, today I got on the phone with one of the remote site admins and we worked out a way to save 17 minutes in the package distribution process.

    The scenario:

My clients get packages delivered based on AD group membership. Our collections query AD groups with workstation names on a 10 minute schedule. So, why does it take 33 minutes for a remote site to get an advertisement once the workstation is added to the AD group?

AD Sites and Services are configured to replicate 4 times an hour (15 minutes for those of you with bad math skills :)). The SMS collections only query the LOCAL DC(S) every 10 minutes at the central site, so site replication needs to take place first. The replication process actually took 17 minutes. Then the SMS collection updates every 10 minutes, which actually took 13 minutes. Once the collection was updated, it took 3 minutes for the advertisement to run the package at the remote site. So, 33 minutes after adding the workstation to the AD group, the application installs. I think that time is too long and you can shorten it by at least 15 minutes.

    The Solution:

Have your remote admins change from the default local (remote) DC in AD Users & Computers to a DC at the central site. That shaves off the entire replication time for AD group membership! This will work for both users and computers when members of AD groups for SMS advertisements.

  • SMS 2003 Tools Add-On

The registry information below will add some extra tools when you right click a computer resource in the SMS 2003 console. Copy and paste the text into Notepad and save the file as a .reg extension. In order to have the reporting server work, you will need to replace the text “YourSMSReportingServer” with your SMS reporting server. A few of the functions rely on the SMS 2003 Toolkit 2 to be installed. If you have problems with it, please let me know.
