  • Making IIS7 highly available using Server 2008 Failover Clustering

This smoking hot little tidbit is burning my fingers…

Microsoft has always recommended providing scalability of IIS to use Network Load Balancing (NLB).  This does not provide high availability.

MS has just released a process to configure IIS as highly available using failover clustering.  This process was previously only possible using third party tools.

    Enjoy!

  • Ottawa Windows Server User Group December Presentation Tentatively Announced – Topics are Flexible at the Moment

I have a tentative commitment from Ottawa local IT PRO and Powershell MVP Kirk Munro to present for OWSUG on December 17, 2009.  Kirk’s forte is Powershell and he has presented on this topic many times.  However, this year he has been made a member of the Windows Springboard Technical Expert Panel (STEP) like myself and David Meyers.

We are in discussion over what the exact topics will be…  Possibilities include Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 (with Application Compatibility and Deployment focus).  I also suggested that Kirk incorporate some of the new powershell enhancements and features since that is where his strengths lie.

Please stay tuned as this will be posted both on the newsletter and the website:

    http://owsug.ca

Any comments or suggestions for presentation topics are always welcome!

  • Ottawa Windows Server User Group Presentation for November – Sharepoint 2010

We have lined up Wes MacDonald, an Ottawa local IT PRO to present at OWSUG on November 19, 2009 on Sharepoint 2010.  Further details to follow and be posted both on our website and in our newsletter:

    http://owsug.ca

Pizza and pop will be served at the event.  Bring your enthusiasm.

  • Letter from Members who Missed Yesterday’s Event

This is an E-mail I received today from members who could not make the meeting yesterday because of the building

    access:

    ***********************************************************************************

    Hey Brad,

I know this has been brought up before, and I know it has fallen on deaf ears because no one has wanted to do anything

about the issue, but I need to raise the visibility of something.

I was among a small group of 3 people who couldn't get into tonights presentation because it was 6:01.  Regardless of the

reason (unusually heavy traffic with bad weather, having a non-government job that doesn't just stop at a certain time of

day, etc), I got there a few minutes too late to get in.  Now technically I guess I don't have any excuse to be upset (although

I was still quite upset) since I have attended UG meetings before and been warned that they won't let you up after 6PM, but

I'm still upset, and not just for me.  One of the people who was trying hard to get allowed upstairs somehow had driven

in from Cornwall, despite the lousy weather.  I imagine he has a job that he was working and that as soon as he finished that

job he headed to the UG meeting.  I could tell that he didn't know the doors would be locked and that he wouldn't be allowed

up either.  Neither did the other person.

Now, I'm not running the OWSUG so I probably shouldn't care much about this, but I can't help but wonder why this problem

has simply been treated with a shrug of the shoulders in the past any why the OWSUG has never come up with a system that

works better.  The meetings at 6PM downtown are fine for government workers that get off at a decent hour and that can just

hang around downtown, but for anyone who has to come in from outside the city and struggle with making time to get there,

the current system sucks.  I also know from the security guard that this happens all the time, where people show up a little

late and are simply turned away.  That doesn't seem like a very friendly, welcoming group that encourages *all* members to

    participate to me.

Blogging about how great the event was and how attendees received free copies of Windows 7 is just throwing salt on the wound.

Anyhow, I don't have any expectation that this will go anywhere.  I just wanted to share the sentiment felt by myself and others

tonight because I personally feel that ignoring the issue is the wrong thing to do.

    *******************************************************************************************************************

Firstly, this is unfortunate but do clearly state that nobody can come in after the specified time.

Now, this has been to date.  In all fairness, until the committee was formed, OWSUG was run more or less by 2 individuals…

This letter shows passion and commitment from our members and if you care enough to write, I certainly care enough to make sure the

    issue is addressed.

As a committee, we will review what is possible to fix this issue.

  • Ottawa Windows Server User Group Executives were a well oiled machine tonight

Tonight was what I consider to be a great trial run of what is to come for the Ottawa Windows Server User Group.

In August, Garth Jones stepped down as president of the OWSUG and I took his place.

It was time to get more stakeholders in the Ottawa Windows Server Users Group.  I like to refer to this as more people with “skin in the game”.

We elected an executive committee.  The committee members are as follows:

    President – Bradley Bird

Vice President, Study Group Leader – Ben Cavanagh

    Past President – Garth Jones

    Treasurer – Abraham Melesse

    Event Coordinator – Paul Tondreau

Study Group Leader – Islam Gomaa

Executives: Joseph Yedid, Alistair Smith, Rick Lantaigne, David Meyers, Todd Lamothe

Under the organization of Paul Tondreau, with most members actively helping tonight was the highest attendance event we have ever had and it went great.

The committee is up and coming and if tonight’s example holds, this will be a great year!

  • Today’s Windows 7 Meeting Rocked the House! AND Windows 7 Study group interest

WHOA!  For OWSUG meetings we have had the occasional turnout of over 40 attendees with a typical attendance of 25 – 35.

Tonight, we had 140 registered for the Windows 7 event.  We had a capacity crowd of more than 110 people!!!

Everybody who attended tonight and who submitted an evaluation form get’s a FREE full copy of Windows 7 Ultimate to take home with them.

We ran out of copies so Microsoft has committed to send copies to those attendees who did not leave with a copy of the new OS.

David Meyers of the STEP team and Todd Lamothe from the MVP awardees really rocked the house!

Thank you so much guys and I look forward to see the rest of the year!

This was only session #2 this year by the way…

These are photos of the capacity crowd that would make an MMS presenter happy at the MS Office in downtown Ottawa:

We run study groups with membership from 8 – 13 members.  In a little more than 24 hours, we have 14 members committed to both attending and help in running the group.  With today’s presentation, this will surely climb!

OWSUG may need to run 2 concurrent Windows 7 study groups in January.  This is fantastic news for the community!

  • Are You Ready for Windows 7? Event Hosted by the Ottawa Windows Server User Group October 22

The OWSUG was already gearing up to present on Windows 7 at our September meeting.  Microsoft also offerred to do a free presentation to the user group as part of their Align IT program.  What better idea than to team with Community resources and have user group contributors present?

Co-Presenters David Meyers and Todd Lamothe will be our speakers at Tursday’s event.

David Meyers is a Windows Springboard Technical Expert Panel (STEP) member like myself and Todd Lamothe is a long time desktop enthusiast and deployment MVP.

Please see below for the event information.
