  • Upgrade from Windows 7 beta to RC Tested

Well, I blogged some time ago about how the upgrade from Windows 7 beta to Windows 7 RC will not be seamless.  See below:

Now I actually tested the upgrade path by modifying the cversion.ini file.  I posted the process on techRepulic.  See below:

Please back your system up before attempting this and note that the procedure is NOT supported by Microsoft but I got it to work nicely.

  • The SWAG BAG from TechEd…

Typically this is not a subject I would blog about however after seeing some of the SWAG given away at the Microsoft Management Summit and TechED, I felt this was a worthy post.

To start, here is a list of common definitions for SWAG from the urban dictionary:

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=swag

After collecting enough marketing leaflets which once recycled, can reconstitute a tree, I received some other interesting items.

I collected a number of novelty books this year themed after the “For Dummies” series including Licensing Windows Server 2008 “For Dummies…”

I also picked up a hilarious kids book from Home Server called “Mommy, Why is there a Server in the House?”  I posted the link for this below:

    http://www.stayathomeserver.com/MommySite/default.aspx

In addition, I received a voucher to write a Microsoft certification exam for $25 and it qualifies for the free second shot…  That is cheaper than the MCT rate… :)

Other giveaways this year included free courses.  I picked up 3 electronic courses.  1 on Active Directory 2008, 1 Exchange 2007, and 1 on Sharepoint 2007.

There were also XBOX 360 consoles, games, Mobile phones, Playstation Portable units, laptops, and netbook equivalent PCs from several vendors…

1 I tried for several times unsuccessfully was a kindle which is an online PDF or elctronic content reader which would allow me to read electronic books on the plane using a workable screen…

Here was my favorite giveaway though…  For the first time, I saw this very special giveaway…  CASH!!!

Yup, different deniminations were being given away.  I saw $100, $300, $500, $1,000, and $3,000!

SWAG has taken on a new meaning!!!

Oh, there were still many squishies, squashies, bobbles, bubbles and as many dingle hoppers and blitz cabooblers as you could think of…

CASH though, is new to me.

  • Partying it up at TechEd – Learning can be fun too!

LA is a great town for a conference.  This year I took my wife down with me.

The conference is 5 days long and theoretically, I suppose I could have capitalized on parties every night…

To start with, we met with some other attendees and discovered an awesome sushi restaurant buried somewhere in town called R23.  My colleague Daniel Neremberg will exchange photos with me and I’ll put these up on Facebook when I get my hands on them.

On Monday night, we attended the Windows 7 Springboard party at the Standard Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.  This was a great site for a party with a rooftop terrace, burining outdoor fireplaces, tiki torches, a rooftop pool and several beanbag waterbed style seats.  I also posted something I am particularly proud of, a photo which was taken with Mark Russonivitch and myself hoisting brewskies. :)  See below:

The night was spent among peers, colleagues and friends and we had a great time.

On Tuesday night, we did a little party hopping which took place between the Conga Room club at LA Live and the Lucky Strike Bowling Lanes nearby.  The party at the Conga Room was hosted by Double Take Software and featured a live Rock & Roll and Blues band where the CEO himself went to town playing the bass.

Not to be outdone, Windows Embeded hosted a party of their own at the Lucky Strike Bowling Lanes nearby where IT folk could tear loose and have a great time and relieve some stress at the same time!

Although I heard that on Wednesday there were more parties about town, I decided to chill with my wife.  We visited North Hollywood and took some pictures of the Celebrity Stars on Hollywood Boulevard and at the Mann’s Chinese theatre.

Tonight was the traditional closeout party at TechEd.  It was themed “Jam on IT” and was held onsite at the LA convention center.  Fun was had by all and the peer networking was enjoyable.  Afterwards, my wife and I once again decided to head out to North Hollywood where we were pleasantly surprised that there was a movie premiere taking place at the Mann’s Chinese Theatre.  Christian Bale was present for his movie premiere of Terminator 4.

My wife and I decided to take a tour which only ran $35/each where we got to see many celebrity houses in Beverly Hills, we got to see many famous locations in Hollywood including The Velvet Room, House of Blues. and the Polo Loco where Brad Pitt had his first job dressed as a chicken…

The evening ended with a meal at “In and Out Burger”.

    http://www.in-n-out.com/

Here we experienced the “Double Double” and ordered it “Animal Style”.  For those who do not know, In and Out Burger features a very simple menu with approximately 5 or 6 items.  The delight and surprise of this hidden jewel is in their secret menu.  See below:

    • Microsoft System Center for the Data Center
    • Prepare for Windows Server 2008 Exams (TS 70-640/642)

For the most part, the technical content in these sessions had some good depth to them.  There was a large audience (over 100) for most sessions as well.  Once again, interactive sessions proved VERY popular.  More to come!

  • TechED Sessions Day 1 and 2

I have attended quite a variety of sessions while out here.  There are several session types:

Lecture Sessions - These are the typical sessions  you would expect where there is a speaker on a podium presenting powerpoint slides and demos before a large audience

Interactive Sessions – These sessions are a little more informal and typically have a smaller audience.  The speaker has some presentation material ready but no specific plan or guide.  This is more of a Q&A style

Hands On Labs – These are self-paced man on computer style where you pick from a menu of labs to go through and using the lab manual and virtual machines, you go through them for some practical hands on training.  There are proctors to assist if needed.

Birds of a Feather Sessions – These sessions are typically round table in format where people with like interests talk together.  There may be demos involved and/or slides but this is often discussion style.

From what I have seen, the Interactive Sessions are relatively VERY popular.  Typically all seats are full and there are people on the edges.  Of the lecture sessions that I attended, the mainstream product line (ie. Windows Server 2008 R2) were the most popular followed by the Hyper-V, virtualization, and SQL topics.

On Monday, I attended the following sessions:

    Certification 101 – interactive

Share the Pain: Techniques for Managing Drivers with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008 – interactive

    Windows Server 2008 R2: A Technical Overview – lecture

Deploying Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007, Part 1: Site Deployment – lecture

Inside Active Directory Integration in Large/Complex Environments – lecture

Why Virtualization and Data Protection Manager are Better Together – interactive

    Windows Server 2008 R2: Hyper-V – lecture

Catch the Wave: Accelerate Planning and Deployment for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V with Solution Accelerators – lecture

Application Virtualization with Microsoft System Center – lecture

Security Management and Protection: What’s in the Microsoft Forefront Client Security Version 2 – lecture

Microsoft Desktop Virtualization Strategy and Product Offerings – lecture

How to Build an Efficient Application Infrastructure through Virtualization – lecture

Considerations and Strategies for Deploying Virtual Clusters – lecture

Overview of Remote Desktop Services (Previously Known as Terminal Services) – lecture

On Tuesday, I attended the following sessions:

Technical Introduction to Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2007 with SP1 – lecture

Interoperability Connectors for Microsoft System Center – lecture

Protecting Applications with Microsoft Data Protection Manager 2007 with SP1 – lecture

Hyper-V and Microsoft System Center: Practical Orchestration and IT Process Automation Recipes – lecture

Windows Server 2008 R2: Work Anywhere Infrastructure – lecture

What’s New in Server Core for Windows Server 2008 R2 – lecture

All You Need to Know about Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Failover Clusters – lecture

What’s New in Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager SP1 and R2 – lecture

Determine Candidates for Hyper-V Server Virtualization and Windows Server 2008 with Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit – lecture

    Windows Server 2008 R2: Q&A – interactive

Server Management Improvements in Windows Server 2008 R2 – lecture

Monitoring Applications on UNIX and Linux with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 – lecture

Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack: Microsoft Enterprise Desktop – interactive

Hyper-V and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008: Real World Tips, Tricks, and Best Practices – lecture

OK, that was a list.  For the rest of the week, I will attend less sessions on any given day relatively speaking.  Points of interest:

    • Attendees really don’t like if the title does not reflect the content…  An example here was on Monday, the Inside Active Directory Integration in Large/Complex Environments session was about this topic, but with System Center Operations Manager 2007.  I talked with many of the attendees who got up and left and they said they were under the impression that this would be a pure AD administration session.
    • The fringe sessions like Monitoring Applications on UNIX and Linux with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 have really low attendance.
    • The planning sessions are very popular these include:
      • Catch the Wave: Accelerate Planning and Deployment for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V with Solution Accelerators
      • Determine Candidates for Hyper-V Server Virtualization and Windows Server 2008 with Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit

More to come as the conference unfolds!

  • TechED 2009 conference in LA is afoot

This is my first TechED conference and LA is a great city to visit.  I arrived yesterday and registered for the conference.  The location is well suited for this event with plenty of room.

I started the day yesterday listening to some certification sessions.  I am no stranger to sessions like these since at the Ottawa Windows Server User Group, we have hosted several meetings where certification was discussed.  In addition, we also host certification study groups as a value add to our members.

A Sharepoint certification study group is currently nearing completion in Ottawa as we speak.

Having people attend sessions like these where why there is value in certification is discussed is always refreshing.  Sometimes, in our professional careers, we lose sight of ways to increase our value both at a personal level and as an asset within an organization.

I also took some time to attend an MVP breakout session where people of like minds discussed things like the new RC release of Windows 7, Hyper-V R2 virtualization, etc…

TechED is a fantastic event to come out and connect with your peers and hear about challenges that other people of like minds are facing while learning about what is new and witnessing Microsoft’s direction with all of the new technologies that are being released.

Today, I will digest some more technical content.  In particular, I am following the following technologies:

    • Hyper-V virtualization
    • System Center
    • Server Management
    • Security
    • SQL

I will post again as the conference unfolds and I have some input on the sessions.
